Hi ladies, We are about to have our 9 yr old tested for a learning disability because he can not read and is 9 and in the 2nd grade. It is so very frustrating and heartbreaking to see my child struggle. I just wondered if any of you moms have children with learning problems? Other than this my son is very smart and has nothing wrong with him. Just thought I would share and get some advice if you have any. Thanks

Yes,

I can definitely relate. My son is 7 and in the 2nd grade and having a very difficult time with reading. If genetics means anything. I had the same issues when I was his age.

It is heartbreaking to go to each quarterly conference and sit there and have both his teacher and reading coach tell me that he is reading on a 1st grade level.

If you talk to him you would have no clue that he has trouble reading. He can tell you things that would make your mouth drop wide open but when it comes to reading. He just has a hard time putting words together.

So yes,

I definitely feel your pains. It's so heartbreaking. I just try to do flash cards with him and have him read the same book every night for a week so he can build up his fluentency (not sure if that's a word?LOL)

So my advice would be to just hang in there and keep encouraging him. Do fun games with word cards, like memory and word search puzzles.

I'm here if you need to chat.

I can't believe it's taken them this long to test him! The testing should give you a really good glimpse into your son's learning trends.  When I was teaching so many parents didn't want their kids tested.  I could not figure out why.  It really lets you see their strengths and weaknesses.  I hope all goes well and they find out the problem.  Good luck.

Well we have been trying to have him tested for a long time now.  Sad I'd say about 2 yrs now we (my hubby and I) have been going back and forth with the school trying to push them to test him and they are just now doing it now that the school year is almost over and he is going to be in 3rd grade and can't read. His little brother is 6 and can read 10 times better than he can..Its really sad to see him notice things like that. I was getting very upset with the school and we were almost to the point of maybe trying to get him into texas scottish rite hospital were the testing is free. But now we will see what happens on the 6th. Thanks for your kind words!

I'm rooting for you Heather! It is very sad and frustrating. I bet he's going to be some super star when he gets older! Even bigger than he already is. Wink

*UPDATE* I had the meeting with the special ed tester, teacher, principal etc. He qualified for extra help and has since starting seeing the special ed teacher for reading and math and will continue to the 3rd grade and will be in her class next year as well. They are also going to help him in all his other subjects by reducing work, exta help, etc. They are confident that by this time next year he will be well on his way to improvement. I just wanted to let everyone know and thank you for your support. I am so happy to finally have something going his way for once!

Yay! I have seen some amazing growth from students who are given extra help.  Just my advice - stay up on everything.  Make sure they are following through.  Kids can get lost easily in schools.  Schedule regular meetings with teachers and special ed teachers to be shown his progress.  Make sure they are doing what needs to be done!
I'm sure you are very revealed!  I love it when kids get the help they need.  It breaks my heart to see any child struggle.
